Project Background

Project HQ - Gulu University
Gulu University was established in 2002 as part of a strategy for peace and sustainable development in Northern Uganda. The University advances a commitment to an interdisciplinary approach to development issues, drawing on ‘the best elements from interrelated and complementary disciplines’.

Project funding - DANIDA
In September 2008, the Danish Agency for International Development (DANIDA) approved a 4-year Enhancement of Research Capacity grant of DKK 9.917.649 for a project titled: Changing Human Security: Recovery from Armed Conflict in Northern Uganda. The project is running from 2009 to 2012.

Project Objectives 
The overall project objective of the ENRECA Gulu Project is to strengthen the capacity of Gulu University to play a useful role in stabilisation and recovery efforts in Northern Uganda through inter-disciplinary academic and policy oriented contributions to understanding human security transformations and dynamics. 

In achieving this overall goal, the ENRECA Gulu project enhances both research capacity and interdisciplinary cooperation at Gulu University towards the production of grounded knowledge on changes in specific aspects of human security in Northern Uganda with emphasis on gender and generational perspectives.

Project Key Intermediate Objectives

The ENRECA-Gulu University project intends to achieve the following ojectives by end of 2012:

  1. PhD Programs
    Three Gulu University staffs are enrolled in/have completed a PhD program and these staff members will publish relevant articles in peer-reviewed journals and teach at their respective faculties.

  2. Master Programs
    Eighteen Gulu University staffs are enrolled in/have completed a Masters program and publish relevant articles in peer-reviewed journals and teach at their respective faculties.

  3. Post-graduate Education
    Gulu University has enhanced capacity for post-graduate education, including: 3 existing MA programs, 2 planned MA programs, and a new cross-faculty course for post-graduates in research methods.

  4. Collaborative Research
    Four collaborative research domains offer opportunities for post- doctoral, doctoral, and related MA level research that produces peer reviewed and other articles and publications.

  5. Project Relevance
    Relevance of research results for communities, local government, and civil society actors is increased through their involvement in research preparation, implementation and dissemination.

  6. Demographic Surveillance System
    Capacity for conducting vital demographic surveillance has been anchored in Gulu University. A Demographic Surveillance System (DSS) provides hands-on opportunities for inter-disciplinary research and related publications as well as a basis for training of students and involving community members.

Project partners

The ENRECA Gulu project, implemented at Gulu University in Northern Uganda, is a joint partnership between Gulu University and the danish universities of Southern Denmark, Copenhagen, and Aarhus.
